Oscars Red Carpet Trends of 2014

I anticipated this event for the longest time (as I'm sure you have as well) getting amped-up by watching other award ceremonies and the fashion that we saw with those. At last, the moment we all have been waiting oh-so patiently for: the 2014 Oscars. Of course, our favorite part is the fashion, right? Right. I fell in love with so many of the designs I saw last night and noticed a couple fairly prominent trends that were carried through many of the stars.

To start off, there were numerous dresses with unique spins and elaborate embellishments that you would need a magnifying glass to catch every last detail. The first, and perhaps, the most obvious re-occurring trend that stood out to me was the neutral and embellished dresses with a lot of detail work. I was practically drooling over these pieces because I'm a sucker for a great neutral piece and of course, I love glitter and sparkly things! The other trend that proved rather popular were the ladies that opted to leave their sleeves (and straps) at home. There were many black dresses following this trend and I must admit that I am still swooning over Emma Watson's look of the night. L-O-V-E it!

DIY Modern Mosaic Painting

Hi friends!
Well, it is winter break for me and like a lot of you, I find myself with maybe a little too much free time on my hands! Out of my boredom, I decided to start up some crafty, hands on activity. I always have a stash of canvases in my closet and figured I would find something to do with one of them, thus we have my example of a modernized mosaic painting! This project was SUPER easy, cheap, and it only took me about 30 minutes tops. Besides, it makes for some fantastic wall decoration!

What you need:
Canvas (any size)
Painter's tape
Acrylic Paint
Brushes
Glitter (optional)
Mod Podge (for glitter)

Step One:
Gather all of your materials together on a clean, covered surface to work on.

Step Two:
Take the blue painter's tape and tape off random geometric sections.
Make sure not to let the tape bubble up. You want the tape to lay flat to the canvas to prevent seepage from the paints.

Step Three:
Begin painting your sections and remember to have fun with it!!!
Also, if you wish to add glitter to your piece (because we always do!), be sure to apply the Mod Podge and then glitter to the desired sections FIRST. Applying the glitter sections first will prevent glitter from sticking to the fresh paint (this will look sloppy, otherwise).

Step Four:
Once all of your paint has fully dried, you then will CAREFULLY remove the blue painter's tape.
Ta-da! Behold, your beautiful masterpiece is complete and ready to display wherever you desire!

I hope you all decide to try this one out and find it as fun as I did in all of my boredom (:

Happy Crafting!

Home is where the heart is...

This was a project that I did a couple months back and I still get such positive feedback on this one! People come into our room and feel welcomed with all of the home-y crafts scattered everywhere. This project also was rather affordable and was not very time consuming (which is music to our ears, right?). Clearly, you can make any state you wish but, come on, we all know you want to do our beloved Nebraska (:

What you need:
Canvas (any size really)
Acrylic Paint
Mod Podge
Glitter
Brushes

Steps:

  1. Apply an even coat of paint on the clean canvas. Note: you may want to do a second coat to ensure that the paint is solid and evenly distributed on the canvas. Let dry.
  2. Second, lightly trace outline of state on the canvas to guide your Mod Podge and glitter later on.
  3. Grab your sponge brush and your container of Mod Podge and begin to generously apply it within the traced lines of your state. I purposely did not apply Mod Podge in one area to create the shape of a heart over my hometown. This way, when you put the glitter on, you will have a cute heart remaining.
  4. Mod Podge is known to dry up quickly so you will want to sprinkle on your glitter rather swiftly after you have applied the Mod Podge to the intended area. I recommend sprinkling a generous amount to the area 2-3 times, dumping what doesn't stick onto a scrap paper for reuse after each time.
  5. Let this beautiful creation lay flat for a while to completely settle and dry up the Mod Podge and glitter to the canvas. Then it's time to show this baby off!

Happy crafting!
